Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion involves removing the disc material that is pushing on nerve roots in the neck along with any bone spurs (or osteophytes) that also push on the nerves. After removal of the disc and spurs, the space where the disc used to be is filled with a piece of bone to allow both vertebra to fuse together. A plate is usually used to hold this in position while the fusion occurs.
